The University of California

The University of California consists of 10 campuses and is considered to be the 12th largest college in the United States. There are 191,000 enrolled students, and approximately 1,340,000 alumni. UC Berkeley was the first campus that was built back in 1868 and it is located in Oakland, California. Among the 10 campuses, there is one law school (UC Hastings), and one national laboratory (UC San Francisco). They are all part of the state of California’s higher education system. California State University and the California Community College’s are also part of the states higher education system which forms a three-tier learning system.

History of the University of California

In 1867, Governor Fredrick Low merged the College of California with the state university, thus developing UC Berkeley. In September of 1873, the campus opened and established their first medical institute at UC San Francisco. Five years later, the UC Hastings campus opened, becoming browsergames top100 the University’s first law school. UC Davis opened in 1905, and is known as the University Farm. In 1907, UC Riverside was built to learn agricultural studies. There are two other general education campuses that opened called UC Los Angeles and UC Santa Barbara. The remaining four campuses that opened were UC San Diego in 1959, UC Santa Cruz and UC Irvine in 1965, and UC Merced in 2005.

Campus Academics

The University of California is well known for inventions as they have at least three per day. Some of the other academics include the Institute of Medicine, National Medal of Science Laureates, National Academy of Engineering, and the Fulbright Scholars. Most of the University of California campuses are ran on a quarterly basis but there are two that are ran per semester.
